interlaced narratives
Interlaced Narratives explores weaving as a medium of storytelling through structure, rhythm, and material interaction. The study focuses on understanding different weaving techniques and the behavior of various yarns, examining how interlacement and tension influence surface, texture, and flexibility. By experimenting with scale, density, and material combinations, this exploration highlights weaving not only as a construction process, but as an expressive language through which emotion, movement, and material character are woven into form.

The process began with an in-depth study of a designer’s collection to understand its structural approach, surface development, and overall design language. Elements such as rhythm, repetition, layering, and material expression were analyzed and translated into woven samples. Rather than replicating the designs, the intention was to interpret the essence of the collection through weave structures, scale, density, and interlacement.

To add visual and emotional depth, color inspiration was drawn from a renowned painting that reflected the mood and design language of the selected collection. The painting was examined for its palette, tonal relationships, and expressive qualities, which were then incorporated into the samples through yarn selection, color placement, and weaving techniques. By combining structural insights from fashion with artistic color narratives, multiple woven samples were developed, allowing an exploration of how structure, color, and material sensibility interact to create textured, expressive textile surfaces.

Final Samples

This sample was woven on a table loom, creating a subtle square-like surface through grouped warp and weft interlacement. The fabric explores plain weave variations combined with colour blocking through horizontal stripes. A neutral cotton warp establishes structure, while coloured weft stripes introduce rhythm and contrast.

This sample was developed on a frame loom, encouraging a more experimental and hand-manipulated approach. It explores varied weft insertion techniques such as soumak wrapping, looping, knotting, and dense packing to create depth and relief. The contrast between bulky and flat yarns enhances tactile richness, highlighting expressive and sculptural surface development.

Frame Weave
Developed on a table loom, this sample interprets wave formations inspired by a painting. In certain sections of the fabric, up and down lifting sequences were experimented with to introduce variation in structure and rhythm. These interventions create subtle movement within the textile, reflecting the dynamic quality of waves.
