Material Dialogues

This project explores the corset as a structural garment by revisiting its historical essence and purpose. Traditionally worn beneath dresses, the corset functioned as an internal framework that shaped and supported the body. In contemporary fashion, however, it has shifted into a purely decorative, outerwear element, often detached from its original intent.

Through this project, I aim to revive the true essence of the corset by reconstructing it as a self-supporting structure. Experimenting with unconventional materials such as resin, metal, and foil, the corset is designed to visibly express strength, rigidity, and form qualities intrinsic to its origin. Even when worn externally, the piece retains its foundational role of structure and support, bridging historical functionality with modern expression.

This project draws inspiration from the golden hues of ancient Indian sculptures where structure, ornamentation, and materiality conveyed power, divinity, and permanence. The warmth of gold, seen across temple statues and sacred forms, becomes a symbolic base. By merging this historical richness with the contemporary corset, a garment defined by precision and structure today, the project bridges tradition and modernity. The corset acts as a modern architectural form, reinterpreting ancient strength through refined construction, controlled silhouettes, and a contemporary design language.

This project reimagines armour as a contemporary fashion garment, shifting it from a symbol of warfare to an expression of structure, strength, and modern identity. Rooted in the idea of protection, the armour is designed as a functional yet sculptural form, where craftsmanship and construction play a central role. Through intensive material exploration, the project investigates how rigid and unconventional materials can be engineered, layered, and articulated to create wearable structures. By merging traditional making sensibilities with modern silhouettes and construction techniques, the project aims to communicate modernity through precision, material innovation, and refined detailing—positioning armour as a powerful intersection of fashion, function, and form.

Plain Weave

Aluminium sheets were first cut into uniform strips and interlaced using a plain weave structure (1 up, 1 down) to create a flexible metallic surface. The woven panel formed a structured grid, which was then sculpted and moulded into a corset silhouette.
