SURFACES AS LANGUAGE

explores fabric manipulation as a medium of expression, focusing on how texture, structure, and detail communicate emotion. Through the study of various manipulation techniques, this work investigates the sensibility of fabric and its ability to transform form and evoke feeling. The exploration emphasizes surface design as a narrative tool, where material behavior and texture become integral to storytelling in fashion.

This project was completed within two weeks, moving through the stages of inspiration, concept development, and final execution.

The process began with observing a flower as a natural form and source of inspiration. Its organic structure was analyzed and translated into geometric interpretations, breaking down curves, layers, and rhythms into simplified shapes. These geometric forms guided the development of surface manipulations, allowing the natural softness of the flower to evolve into structured textures.

CONCEPT/PROCESS BOARD

Untitled design - 3.PNG

Color, texture, and depth were explored using different fabrics to understand how material choice influences surface outcome. Each fabric responded uniquely to manipulation, expressing its own movement, character, and tactile quality. Through layering and surface construction techniques, the project translated the visual and tactile essence of flowers into textile form. The surface was used as a medium to express transformation, material sensitivity, and emotion.

Cut and Slash

Developed a textured surface using the cut and slash technique by layering threads and fabric between a water-soluble base. Applied dense machine stitching to hold the structure, and after dissolving the sheet, a sculptural surface effect was formed.

Gathers

Developed surface gathers through hand stitching and controlled thread pulling to create natural volume.

Honeycomb

IMG_4608 3.heic

Developed a honeycomb smocked texture using marked grid placement and precise hand stitching for controlled structure.

Flowers

Used hand smocking to manipulate fabric into dimensional floral motifs, adding texture and visual interest to the surface.

Applique

Applique

Developed fabric flowers through appliqué and enhanced the surface by using French knots to form delicate stems.
